A Needless Annoyance
Getting into debt these days is not difficult. People defaulting on loans is not difficult to find among the most frugal of us. One deserves sympathy with the positions they are in but it can be difficult for people to get out of the mess. Having the debt in the first place is bad enough, but the annoying debt collectors makes the debt unbearable. They have one job, which is to collect any money owed to their clients. Showing signs of sympathy may be too hard, as they appear tough. As they are human too, they face frustrations of people while getting frustrated themselves. Ways to handle these interactions effectively without getting into major problems must be found?
Debt Collection is Big Business
Debt collection is a lucrative business. They want to collect payment on a debt that you owe that they may have bought from the original creditor. Agencies are motivated by large profits from past due bills, and will try anything they can to get people to pay off their debts. Making the debtor pay up is what will earn the collection agency their livelihood. You may find yourself threatened with legal action or being called several times a day if you do not pay as fast as they tell you to. If they do not follow the governmental guidelines in their collection efforts, they can be reported. There are laws that protect you from being ripped off by your creditors, as well as their collection agencies.
Do Not Panic
Most debtors panic when they start receiving calls from a collection agency, which is what they should never do. If you have questions about who the creditor is, you can demand this in writing from the collection agency. You have a right to dispute the amount of money they say you owe. Ask for options to settle the account, with the option to decline any offers. One tactic often used by collection agencies is calling up the debtor at work and at home. Calls cannot be made during the hours of 9 PM and 8 AM, at work or at home. Retain the proof of delivery of any communication you send to restrict their actions in case you need to implement further action. You still have a debt to pay off, but they cannot harass you about it any longer.
Credit Counseling Service
One last option is to go to a credit counseling agency to settle your debts without going to court. Judges are the only people who can enforce a wage garnishment on you, no matter how much a collector wants you to believe otherwise. An agency or collector who does this should be reported for harassment. Your debt is still there, of which there is no doubt. Do not destroy your situation before you have had a chance to redeem it.
