Sharron Angle wins Nevada GOP primary, wants Prohibition

In the race for Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s seat, Republican primary winner Sharron Angle from Nevada is riding her tea party credentials in what her supporters hope can be a move to clear the old guard out of Washington. Yet a number of Sharron Angle’s views are attracting the wrong kind of attention. The LA Times reports the previous schoolteacher and member of the Church of Scientology first wants to get rid of Social Security for the youthful employed. Admittedly, that may only be semi-controversial, as Social Security isn’t doing so well in recent years. More controversial are her views on education, prohibition and prison inmate treatment.

Get out of education, Sharron Angle tells big government

According to her campaign site, Sharron Angle wants the Department of Education to disband on grounds that the federal organization is unconstitutional. She points to failed one-size-fits-all programs like No Child Left behind that have allegedly overburdened classrooms and overburdened teachers with excessive testing and regulations. Choice choices for education, whether they be home schooling, instant cash loans vouchers or charter school options, are better for children, teachers and families, suggests Angle.

A return to prohibition

Sharron Angle’s stance on alcohol is perhaps the one view that could cause her probably the most trouble in her battle against Harry Reid in Nevada. Alcohol, said Angle in a 2006 interview for Liberty Watch, should be dealt with by law enforcement and also the legal system much within the same way as marijuana, reports Slash Politics. The result would be that alcohol would become illegal, as it was within the Prohibition era. A lot more than a couple of people are scratching their heads over this, as Sharron Angle comes from Nevada, which features Las Vegas prominently among its tourist destinations. Jerry Stacy, spokesman for Sharron Angle, is still trying to spin that one away.

Spa treatments for inmates

As a Scientologist, Sharron Angle doesn’t support the use of psychiatric drugs. She has tried to “gain support for a prison drug rehabilitation program that would involve prisoners quitting drugs cold turkey, with saunas and massages as part of treatment,” reports Talking Points Memo. This is what L. Ron Hubbard thought about it, according to Angle.
